Happy birthday, Canada! We decided to draw parallels between why we love this great country, and why we also love Canadian handmade. Without further ado, here are five reasons why Canadian handmade rules:
1. It’s inspiring!
Artists, artisans, and designers from coast-to-coast often draw inspiration from their surroundings, be they leather designers tapped into the natural beauty of Gabriola Island, BC (Indian Summer Leather Design), jewellers engulfed by the majestic Rocky Mountains (Mackenzie Jones, pictured above) or photographers capturing the hustle and bustle of a major metropolis (Lorie Slater Photography). It’s no wonder why lovers of Canadian handmade are inspired, too — we experience what the makers experience, and what’s not to love about that?
2. It’s uniting!
Canadian handmade is a country-wide community movement, plain and simple. We are a tight-knit bunch, united by common goals and interests. We care about where our products come from and the people who make them. They are our neighbours, our farmers, our teachers, and our family; we love and appreciate them as such.
3. It’s diverse!
All walks of life can find something to love about Canadian handmade. One look at the above print by Port Paper Co. beautifully summarizes our diversity as a nation; one stroll through any of our 18 shows in 12 different cities and it’s quick to see that Canadian handmade never discriminates and always embraces. It’s part of our identity.
4. It’s unique!
Quality over quantity, with style AND substance: the unique characteristics of Canadian handmade are literally endless. Our artists, artisans, and designers are not hobbyists; they are professionally-trained and fully-dedicated craftspeople. Their immense passion and talent resonates in each and every piece that they create.
5. It’s patriotic!
Hopefully by now, reading this list has evoked a strong sense of national pride. That same pride is strongly echoed by our artists, artisans, and designers, and exuded in their works. We live in the greatest country in the world, and today we celebrate not only its 149th birthday, but also the people who make it stand head and shoulders above the rest.
